[ScreenOS] Can existing address book objects be added with global entities such as MIP/VIP?

Article ID: KB28125 KB Last Updated: 16 Oct 2013Version: 1.0
Summary:
When adding existing address book objects with global entities i.e., mapped Internet Protocol address/virtual IP address (MIP/VIP), an error message is generated. The firewall does not permit certain combinations in a policy. These prohibited combinations are listed.
Symptoms:

A policy is created to use a MIP object:

An existing address book entry is then added to the MIP policy:

However, when user clicks OK, an error message is displayed:

Destination addresses are not in same zone. Please check again.

When the MIP/VIP policy is created for a global zone, then the error is:

Set address failed.
'192.168.2.0/24' Policy: can't be modified

Cause:

Solution:

This behavior is by design. The firewall will not allow the following combinations in a policy:

  1. Mapped Internet Protocol address (MIP) with an existing address-book entry

  2. Virtual IP address (VIP) with an existing address-book entry

  3. MIP and VIP together

This is because the firewall uses a separate logic for a global object as it maps to an internal host. The firewall prohibits these combinations to avoid confusion with an address book entry which just permits/deny traffic and does not do any translations.
