How to enable graceful-restart (GR) for dynamic routing protocols running within a routing-instance.

Article ID: KB28165 KB Last Updated: 02 Dec 2013Version: 2.0
Summary:
This article describes the requirement to enable graceful-restart for dynamic routing protocols running within the routing-instances.
Symptoms:
When you configure graceful-restart under the [routing-options] stanza, this enables graceful-restart for all dynamic routing protocols running within the master routing instance (inet.0) only.
Cause:

Solution:
In order to enable graceful-restart for protocols running within other routing-instances, you need to configure graceful-restart under each and routing-instance stanza, [routing-instances <instance-name> routing-options].

See below test results:

Initially, OSPF is configured in both inet.0 and TEST routing-instances, but graceful-restart is only enabled for inet.0 routing-instance..

lab@3600B> show configuration | match ospf | display set
set protocols ospf area 0.0.0.0 interface reth0.100
set routing-instances TEST protocols ospf area 0.0.0.0 interface reth0.200

lab@3600B> show configuration | match graceful-restart | display set
set routing-options graceful-restart
                                << graceful-restart not set for TEST routing-instance

lab@3600B> show ospf overview instance master
Instance: master
Router ID: 30.17.0.200
Route table index: 0
LSA refresh time: 50 minutes
Restart: Enabled <<< graceful-restart enabled
Restart duration: 180 sec
Restart grace period: 210 sec
Helper mode: Enabled

Authentication Type: None
Area border routers: 0, AS boundary routers: 0

lab@3600B> show ospf overview instance TEST
Instance: TEST
Router ID: 0.0.0.0
Route table index: 5
LSA refresh time: 50 minutes
                                                     <<< missing graceful-restart statement

Once you configure graceful-restart under [routing-instances TEST routing-options] stanza, it gets enabled for OSPF running in TEST routing-instance.

lab@3600B> show configuration | match graceful-restart | display set
set routing-options graceful-restart
set routing-instances TEST routing-options graceful-restart

lab@3600B> show ospf overview instance TEST
Instance: TEST
Router ID: 0.0.0.0
Route table index: 5
LSA refresh time: 50 minutes
Restart: Enabled
Restart duration: 180 sec
Restart grace period: 210 sec
Helper mode: Enabled
Area: 0.0.0.0
Stub type: Not Stub
Authentication Type: None
Area border routers: 0, AS boundary routers: 0
Neighbors
Up (in full state): 0
Topology: default (ID 0)
Prefix export count: 0
Full SPF runs: 11
SPF delay: 0.200000 sec, SPF holddown: 5 sec, SPF rapid runs: 3
Backup SPF: Not Needed
