[ScreenOS] SNMP is not showing all BGP states of a firewall

Article ID: KB28979 KB Last Updated: 25 Sep 2020Version: 2.0

This article explains why Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) states across multiple virtual systems (vsys) are not shown during an SNMP walk.

"SNMP walk" refers to the snmpwalk command, which is part of the net-snmp toolkit. The kit provides a suite of command line applications that can be used to query and act on remote SNMP agents.

The snmpwalk command performs a series of getnexts automatically and stops when it returns results that are no longer inside the range of the OID originally specified.

The situation is revealed in the scenario below.

  • A virtual system administrator (vsys admin) has three virtual systems (vsys) on the firewall.
  • Each vsys has its BGP peers.
  • The snmpwalk command is executed on OID .
  • Only the BGP peers of the first vsys are displayed in the output.
  • How do you get the BGP peer information for the other two vsys?

By design, the SNMP module for ScreenOS does not support multiple vsys for BGP neighbors.

When the snmpwalk command is executed on an OID in ScreenOS, the BGP peers for only one vsys are displayed in the output.
