When trying to restart guiSvrStatusMonitor and devSvrStatusMonitor, the status is showing as: gui/devSvrStatusMonitor.pid exists, but gui/devSvrStatusMonitor is off. This article explains what is causing the issue and how to correct it.

Symptoms:

The problem is shown in the scenario below:

  • guiSvrStatusMonitor and devSvrStatusMonitor are off.

  • Customer tries to restart guiSvrStatusMonitor and devSvrStatusMonitor.

  • The status below is displayed:

[root@nsmlinux ~]# /etc/init.d/guiSvr status
nsm owner is nsm
Retrieving status...
guiSvrManager (pid 17430)..........................ON
guiSvrMasterController (pid 17604).................ON
guiSvrDirectiveHandler (pid 17758).................ON
guiSvrLicenseManager (pid 17935)...................ON
guiSvrStatusMonitor.pid exists, but guiSvrStatusMonitor is off
guiSvrWebProxy (pid 18073)....................ON

  • The situation is the same for devSvr.
Cause:

The error below appeared in /var/netscreen/guiSvr/errorLog/statusMonitor.0 or /var/netscreen/DevSvr/errorLog/statusMonitor.0.

--------------------------------------------------
[Error] [3086016-soFile.c:648] fopen(/etc/fstab, r) failed [errno=13, Permission denied]
--------------------------------------------------

The /etc/fstab file permissions were incorrect. They were found to be 600, instead of 644.

Solution:

The permissions for /etc/fstab were changed to 644 by the root user.

chmod 644 /etc/fstab

The statusMonitor services were restarted for both guiSvr and devSvr.

/usr/netscreen/GuiSvr/bin/guiSvrStatusMonitor.sh restart

/usr/netscreen/DevSvr/bin/devSvrStatusMonitor.sh restart

The problem was resolved.
