[MX] SNMP not polling to fxp0 configured under logical-systems

Summary:

When fxp0 is configured under a logical-system, SNMP polling to the interface will fail. This article explains the issue and suggests two alternative configurations.

Symptoms:

How do you configure for SNMP polling to fxp0 while when it is configured in a logical-system?

Cause:

Example: SNMP polling will not work to fxp0 when configured like this:


logical-systems {
     management {
           interfaces {
                  fxp0 {
                       unit 0;
                   }
           }
           routing-options {
                  static {
                        route 0.0.0.0/0 next-hop x.x.x.x;
                  }
           }
     }
}

Solution:

If the goal is to have SNMP poll to fxp0, then fxp0 cannot be configured under logical-systems or within a routing instance.

For SNMP polling to fxp0 to work, there are two alternatives:

  1. Configure fxp0 outside of the logical-systems/routing instance
  2. Configure a different interface under the local-systems/routing instance and poll to that interface instead
