Article ID: KB29224 KB Last Updated: 19 Jun 2014Version: 2.0
Summary:

This article provides an explanation of an error message which can be seen in the log buffer of a Wireless LAN Controller (WLC).

Symptoms:

ERROR TUN_UNEXPECTED_MESSAGE: Received unexpected UPDATE for tunnel remote=a.b.c.d orig_vlan=xxxx - tunnel unknown

(where a.b.c.d is an IP address and xxxx is a VLAN name)

Cause:

Solution:

The message should not be an ERROR message.

It does not indicate an actual problem, as explained in the scenario below.

VLAN tunneling model:

  • Host WLCs, where the VLAN is present.

  • Remote WLCs, where the VLAN is not present.

  • A remote WLC will initiate a tunnel toward the host WLC when the remote WLC needs a VLAN.

  • The message appears on the remote WLC (receiver of the unexpected UPDATE).

  • The client that is using the tunneled VLAN roams away; therefore, the tunnel is destroyed.

  • On the host WLC (originator of the unexpected UPDATE), the tunnel will be up for another three minutes for consistency and debugging.
