[WLC/WLA] Troubleshooting Access Point (AP) reboots

This article provides information on what data to gather when troubleshooting AP reboots.




If you are experiencing AP reboots and are able to rule out any network issues as the cause:

  1. Collect the data below.
  2. Analyze the data yourself to determine the cause of the fault, or provide it to JTAC.


# set log trace enable severity debug
# set trace tapa level 10
# set trace apm_fmx level 10
# set trace apm_mgr level 10

As the traces are verbose, a syslog server is highly recommended:

# set log server a.b.c.d severity debug 


Configure a packet capture at the controller's uplink.


  • Both the traces and packet captures should capture the same time interval, relative to the same reference watch. For example, if the traces are running between 00:00 and 00:02, the packet capture should be collected during the same time interval.

  • The management traffic between the WLAs and WLCs is usually encrypted. The management traffic must be analyzed. Disable this feature while the troubleshooting efforts are running:

# set ap security none

Manually reboot the monitored APs. Manual and voluntary reboot completely turns off the encryption feature.

#show log buffer -20000
#show log trace
(or the syslog output)
