[Archive] [STRM/JSA] "Patch still in progress - Do Not Reboot" message received after patch is applied

Article ID: KB29331 KB Last Updated: 13 May 2020Version: 2.0

This article explains why the Patch still in progress - Do Not Reboot message is received by a user who logs into the command line after a patch is applied by an administrator.

A user who logs into the command line after a patch is applied by an administrator receives the Patch still in progress - Do Not Reboot message.

When an STRM/JSA is patched, a screen session is opened to ensure that the administrator still has access to the installation menus, in case the SSH session becomes disconnected.

If an installation is in process, the command line will repeat the Patch still in progress - Do Not Reboot message to inform users with active SSH sessions that they should not restart the system.

This is a safety feature. It ensures that the system is restarted only after the patch update is completed.

This situation can happen when an administrator closes his SSH session window before the patch is completed, with the system waiting for some form of input such as the Press Enter to continue prompt.

To rectify the situation, the administrator can either rerun the installation command or reattach his screen session.

Rerun the patch, using the command below:

Or, reattach to an existing installation session, using the procedure below:

  • View the list of screen sessions:
screen -list

If the installation is disconnected, the status is displayed as Detached.

  • Reattach to the screen session:
screen -x
  • Follow the prompts to complete the patch installation.
