How to add and activate a model device in Junos Space

Article ID: KB29574 KB Last Updated: 23 Jul 2015Version: 1.0

This article explains the procedure to model a device in Junos Space.

The goal is to model a device in Junos Space and activate it.

Follow these steps:

  1. Create a connection profile.

In the Junos Space UI under Platform, navigate to Devices > Model devices > Connection profiles.
The connection profile defines a basic template about the device interface that will connect to Junos Space, and whether Junos Space IP is NATted by the intermediate firewall between Junos Space and the device.

  2. Create a model device.

This template defines the device platform, IP address, root user and password, and whether a template should be associated to the device.

Select the connection profile created in Step 1. Device discovery can either be manually one at a time or via a csv file upload.

  3. On the next page, define the interface IP and gateway, and select Finish.

Once the job is finished, the device will be listed under Device Management in Platform.

  4. To activate the device, right-click on the device. Under Model devices, select View configlet.

  5. Copy and paste the entire set of commands to Notepad. Manually replace the OTP value and root authentication value with the root password given while creating the model device. This is used as the HMAC for the first connect.

  6. Paste the set of commands to the CLI and commit.

  7. Wait for the device to appear in the Junos Space UI under Device Management in Platform. Once the device appears in the Junos Space UI, Junos Space will automatically sync itself with the device config.

If the device doesn't appear in the Junos Space UI, run the following commands from the Junos Space CLI:

#tcpdump -n -nn | grep <device IP>

#grep <device IP> /var/log/jboss/servers/server1/server.log

Note: In this type of communication, the device initiates a connection to Junos Space on port 7804. The intermediate firewall should be configured to allow connections from the device to Junos Space on port 7804.
