Syslog message: mountd[xxxx]: bad exports list line /var/db/

Article ID: KB29859 KB Last Updated: 05 Jan 2017Version: 2.0

This article explains the mountd: bad exports list line error messages.

The following messages can appear after performing an upgrade with Junos OS 13.x releases:

Mar 16 03:58:32 ausmopbr1 init: mountd-service (PID 1446) terminate signal sent
Mar 16 04:07:56 ausmopbr1 init: mountd-service (PID 1531) started
Mar 16 04:07:57 ausmopbr1 mountd[1531]: bad exports list line /var/db/appid
Mar 16 04:07:57 ausmopbr1 mountd[1531]: bad exports list line /var/db/idpd
Mar 16 04:07:57 ausmopbr1 mountd[1531]: bad exports list line /var/db/ext/juniper

The following actions can trigger the messages:

  • Router bootup
  • show system snapshot
  • request system snapshot

The mountd daemon is a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) that answers a client request to mount a file system. The mountd daemon finds out which file systems are available by reading the /etc/xtab file.

The exports file specifies remote mount points for the NFS mount protocol per the NFS server specification. There are default entries in the exports file, such as /etc/exports.1 for service PICs, and so on. These mount points are mounted when the FPCs are installed in the router.

The directories at /var/db are created only with some packages, but due to the default mountd configuration containing these directories, these errors are generated when the default mountd configuration is run and tries to mount the nonexistent directories.

These messages are harmless and can be ignored.

The messages can be filtered from the syslog and they will be suppressed in future releases.
