[EX] Recommended topology for high-availability and aggregation

1

Article ID: KB30335 KB Last Updated: 21 Sep 2020Version: 2.0
Summary:

This article describes the recommended EX9200 topology for high-availability and aggregation.

Symptoms:

What is Juniper's recommended topology to provide high-availability and aggregation?

Solution:

The EX9200 Series supports two primary topologies for high availability and aggregation: a) MC-LAG and b) Virtual Chassis.

Juniper highly recommends using MC-LAG as the topology to provide high-availability and aggregation rather than Virtual Chassis. More robust failover functionality exists on MC-LAG as well as increased feature support. The MC-LAG configuration gives operators the benefits of increased bandwidth and link efficiency, link resiliency between layers, and the survivability provided by independent control and management planes.

For more details on MC-LAG, refer to Example: Configuring Multichassis Link Aggregation on EX9200 Switches in the Core for Campus Networks

Note: Support for EX9200 Virtual Chassis was phased out as of Junos OS Release 17.1R1, so do not upgrade an EX9200 Virtual Chassis to Junos OS Release 17.1R1 and beyond. For deployments with EX9200 switches, we recommend planning or moving to MC-LAG or Junos Fusion Enterprise architectures instead of using a Virtual Chassis.
Modification History:
2020-09-21: Added note on recommendation for moving to MC-LAG or Junos Fusion Enterprise.
