[SRX] How to poll for statistics of a particular interface through SNMP

Article ID: KB30691 KB Last Updated: 29 Dec 2015Version: 1.0

This article describes the procedure to poll an SRX device for the statistics of a particular interface.

A network administrator often needs to poll SRX devices for various statistics, such as the bandwidth used, input errors, output errors, and so on, of a particular interface.

For example, if the Internet bandwidth usage of a perimeter firewall needs to be calculated, it is best to poll the firewall for the input and output traffic rate on the Internet-facing interface.

The procedure described in this article will help the administrator do this.

To poll SRX devices:

  1. Extract the SNMP index of the interface using the following CLI command:

    > show interfaces <interface-name> extensive

    For example :

root# run show interfaces ge-0/0/0 extensive
Physical interface: ge-0/0/0, Enabled, Physical link is Up
Interface index: 134, SNMP ifIndex: 508, Generation: 137
    >>>>>>>>SNMP Index = 508<<<<<<<<<<<<

  2. Locate the MIB file.

mib-jnx-if-extensions is the MIB that will help in obtaining interface statistics.

The following links provide more information on this MIB:

  3. Locate the required OID and append the SNMP index of the interface.

    For example:

    ifIn1SecRate - .
Input rate on interface ge-0/0/0 of Step 1:  .

    ifOut1SecRate - .
Output rate of interface ge-0/0/0 of Step 1: .

Once the required OID is obtained, an SNMP get request can be sent to the SRX to obtain the corresponding value.
