Article ID: KB31163 KB Last Updated: 08 Oct 2020Version: 2.0
Summary:

This article explains how to copy the host log from the RE (routing engine) and FPCs (flexible PIC concentrator) to Junos. The host log of FPCs are required by Juniper Technical Support (JTAC) for problem analysis.

Similar to the QFX5100, Junos runs on a software called Hypervisor or Host Software. The host log (i.e. files under /var/log on the Host Software) in both the RE and FPCs is useful for problem diagnostics. There is a new command in QFX10000 to copy the host log from the Host Software to Junos. QFX10008 is the first platform to load the Host Software on FPCs (i.e. linecard). Currently, there is no CLI command to copy the host log from FPCs to Junos.

Solution:

Copy host log from RE:

  1. Create a directory under /var/tmp in JUNOS

    user@QFX10008-re0> file make-directory /var/tmp/test
  2. Copy files in directory /var/log in Host Software to JUNOS

    user@QFX10008-re0> request app-engine file-copy log from-jhost * to-vjunos /var/tmp/test/.
  3. Login to the shell prompt as the root user

    user@QFX10008-re0> start shell user root
  4. Use the command "tar" to compress the files

    root@QFX10008-re0:RE:0% tar -zcvf /var/tmp/varlog-re0.tar.gz /var/tmp/test/*
  5. Verify the compressed file is created

    root@QFX10008-re0:RE:0% ls -l /var/tmp/varlog-re0.tar.gz
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root field 7278647 Sep 16 01:35 /var/tmp/varlog-re0.tar.gz
  6. Exit from the shell prompt  using the command "exit"

    root@QFX10008-re0:RE:0% exit
    exit
    user@QFX10008-re0>

Copy host log on an FPC:

  1. Login to the shell prompt as the root user

    user@QFX10008-re0> start shell user root
  2. Remote login to a FPC

    root@QFX10008-re0:RE:0% rlogin -Ji fpc0
  3. Compress /var/log using the command "tar"

    root@fpc0:~# tar -zcvf /var/tmp/varlog-mem0.tar.gz /var/log/*
  4. Verify the compressed file is created

    root@fpc0:~# ls -l /var/tmp/varlog-mem0.tar.gz
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 205933 Sep 16 01:10 /var/tmp/varlog-mem0.tar.gz
  5. Copy the file from FPC to JUNOS

    root@fpc0:~# rcp /var/tmp/varlog-mem0.tar.gz 128.0.0.1:/var/tmp
  6. Use the command "exit" to exit from FPC0

    root@fpc0:~# exit
  7. Verify the file is in JUNOS

    root@QFX10008-re0:RE:0% ls -l /var/tmp/varlog-mem0.tar.gz
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root field 205933 Sep 16 01:17 /var/tmp/varlog-mem0.tar.gz
