[Archive] SmartPass Migration to new Server

Steps to take while migrating SmartPass to a new server.
Existing Server is out dated.

Preparing for the Migration:

  1. Arrange a Maintenance Window for this activity. Authenticated users will not face any issues, however, new users will not have SmartPass service until the migration is complete.
  2. Capture the license details. Go to Setup > Licensing on your SmartPass WebGUI to find your license information.  Note: We recommend saving the license Information as a text file so it can be attached to the JTAC Service Request that will be used during the migration.
  3. Take a Manual Backup of the SmartPass, including the monitoring database.  Select Maintenance > Backup & Restore.  Check 'Include Monitoring Data', and then click Create Backup (from the Manual Backup section).  Save the backup to your local machine.

  4. Copy the entire SmartPass folder (usually C:\ Program Files\ Trapeze Networks) to a safe location; as this will be used as an additional backup. The backup can be deleted after a successful migration.

Note: Please make sure that the version of SmartPass installed on the New Server is same as the Current Server.  For Ex: If you are running SmartPass 9.1 on your old server, you should install SmartPass 9.1 on the new server as well.


  1. During Maintenance Window, contact Support to have an Advanced Customer Care licensing representative re-host the Smartpass licenses to the new server.
  2. After a re-host, apply the licenses to the new server.
  3. Next,  "Restore" the configuration by using the Backup & Restore option which is available in the Maintenance tab of Smartpass Web GUI.  Under Backups Management, choose the backup to restore, select 'Restore' from the pulldown, and then click Go. 

  4. Finally, your new server is ready to serve Smartpass.

Note: The configuration on the controller which points to SmartPass Server will have to be altered if the new server has a different IP address from the existing one.
