Summary:
When an XRE uses a different software version than an existing member or RE of an EX8200 virtual chassis, the XRE must be upgraded in order to form a working virtual chassis. This article will help in upgrading standalone XRE200.
Symptoms:
  1. One XRE is on different software version after the software upgrade of EX8200 virtual-chassis.
  2. Need to replace faulty XRE with another XRE running different software version.

Solution:
There are three different media for installing Junos OS software: Pre-requisites:
  1. Download the software version from Juniper support website for XRE.
  2. Access the XRE through the console.

USB Method:

  1. Format a USB drive to FAT32 partition.
  2. Copy the Junos file to the USB drive.

  3. Access the XRE through the console.
  4. Connect the USB drive to XRE.

  5. Login to shell mode of XRE and mount the USB drive:
root@:RE:8%mount_msdosfs /dev/da1s1 /mnt

      6. Copy the Junos software package from the USB to the /var/tmp/ directory:

root@:RE:8% cp jinstall-ex-8200-12.3R12-domestic-signed.tgz /var/tmp

      7.  Execute the upgrade using the following command:

         root>request system software add /var/tmp/
jinstall-ex-8200-12.3R12-domestic-signed.tgz

      8.  Reboot the XRE “request system reboot”.

root>request system reboot
Reboot the system? [yes, no] (no) YES

      9.  After the reboot has completed, log in and verify that the new version of the software is properly installed:

root>show version

FTP Method:

root#set system services ssh
root#set system services ftp
root#set interfaces me0 unit 0 family inet address <IP ADDRESS>
  1. Access the XRE through the console.
  2. Configure SSH, FTP and assign an IP to ME0 interface.

  3. Connect the PC to the ME0 interface and assign IP address to the PC in same subnet.
  4. Copy the Junos image from the PC to XRE via FTP in /var/tmp directory.

  5. Execute:
    request system software add /var/tmp/<junos-image

  6. Reboot the XRE:
    request system reboot

  7. After the reboot has completed, log in and verify the new version of the software is properly installed:
     root>show version

J-Web Method

  1. Take console access to the XRE.
  2. Configure web-management and assign an IP to ME0 interface.

    Root#set system services web-management http
    Root#set interfaces me0 unit 0 family inet address <IP ADDRESS>

  3. Connect the PC to the ME0 interface and assign IP address to the PC in same subnet.

  4. Open J-web using ME0 IP address.

  5. Click on “Maintain” Tab and then click “upload package” under “Software”.

  6. Upload the file and click on "Upload and Install package" tab.
