Article ID: KB32266 KB Last Updated: 09 Nov 2017Version: 1.0
Summary:

Configuring 10G SFP+ module in PIC 0 as virtual-chassis port (VCP) interface is not supported.

Symptoms:
root@juniper> request virtual-chassis vc-port set pic-slot 0 port 33
error: PIC slot 0 is not valid for virtual chassis port

Cause:

For Example, EX4300-32F device has 32 network ports and an additional 4 ports BUILTIN on PIC 0.

Output:

root@EX4300# run show chassis hardware detail
Hardware inventory:

According to the  Virtual Chassis Feature Guide, in an EX4300 virtual chassis, you can interconnect the EX4300 switches by using uplink ports configured as virtual dhassis ports (VCPs). The QSFP+ uplink ports, which support 40Gbps speeds and can connect switches that are up to 492 feet (150 m) apart, are configured as VCPs by default. The SFP+ uplink ports, which support 10Gbps speeds and can connect switches that are up to 6.2 miles (10 km) apart, can be configured into VCPs.

Solution:

To form the virtual chassis, you can:

  1. Use PIC 1 QSFP+ ports which is configured as VCP ports by default.

  2. Install an addional supported uplink module which has 10G/40G bandwidth.

The additional uplink module will be detected as PIC 2 in "show chassis hardware detail" as shown in below output.

root@EX4300# run show chassis hardware detail
    Hardware inventory:
