[MX] What is the Delay Buffer value if no delay-buffer-rate is configured under TCP?

Article ID: KB32282 KB Last Updated: 03 Aug 2019Version: 2.0
Summary:

Delay-buffer-rate can be configured under TCP (traffic control profile) as follows:

# show class-of-service traffic-control-profiles
test {
    scheduler-map test;
    shaping-rate 1g;
    guaranteed-rate 1g;
    delay-buffer-rate 1g;
}

However, if there is no delay-buffer-rate configured, how is the delay buffer calculated?

Solution:

DBR (delay-buffer-rate) is applied through a traffic-control-profile (TCP). Buffer allocation through DBR depends upon the mode, CIR or PIR, in which the IFD is configured. If DBR is not explicitly configured, then DBR uses CIR for calculation and if CIR is not configured it takes PIR into consideration.

Example:

If the CIR (Guaranteed rate) is configured, then delay buffer equals CIR.

# show class-of-service traffic-control-profiles
test {
    scheduler-map test;
    shaping-rate 1g;
    guaranteed-rate 500M;
}

If there's no CIR configured, then delay buffer equals Shaping-rate (PIR).

# show class-of-service traffic-control-profiles
test {
    scheduler-map test;
    shaping-rate 1g;
}

Modification History:
2019-08-03: Added DBR clarification.
