[QFX] Error message: Could not create jail socket: /jail/var/run/eventd_events

Article ID: KB32311 KB Last Updated: 12 Mar 2019Version: 1.0

This article details the reason for the "Could not create jail socket: /jail/var/run/eventd_events" error to be seen on QFX Series switches and suggests a couple of workarounds that would resolve the error.

After NSSU or software upgrade:

Dec 21 23:09:56 root mgd[3127]: UI_CMDLINE_READ_LINE: User 'root', command 'request system software nonstop-upgrade add set [ /var/tmp/jinstall-qfx-5-flex-14.1X53-D30.3-domestic-signed.tgz /var/tmp/jinstall-ex-4300-14.1X53-D30.3-domestic-signed.tgz ] '

The switch shows the following continuous logs on the primary of the form:

Dec 21 23:31:14 root eventd: Could not create jail socket: /jail/var/run/log: No such file or directory
Dec 21 23:31:14 root eventd[1098]: EVENTD_JAIL_SOCKET_FAILURE: Could not create jail socket: /jail/var/run/eventd_events

Whenever a /jail directory is present, the event-daemon logic thinks that a /jail socket needs to be created. However, the partition has only the /jail directory and not /jail/var/run. Hence, the event-daemon jail socket creation fails, resulting in the above error.

There are two workarounds for this issue:

  • Creating the /jail/var/run/ directory manually will clear the eventd jail error messages. After creating the directory manually, the eventd process needs to be restarted by using the following command:

cli> restart event-processing

  • Reinstalling the image will resolve the directory issues and clear this message. Also reinstalling the image will take care of the other missing directories under /jail as well, if there are any.
