This article summarizes the best practice information for extending and maintaining the hardware of SRX devices. For complete information, refer to the "Maintaining Components" sections for your device in the Hardware Documentation here: Hardware Maintenance, Replacement, and Troubleshooting Procedures.
Note: This does not include virtual equipment. Please see the user guide storage vendors used for virtual-based SRX.
Branch SRX Series
- Inspect the installation site for moisture, loose wires or cables, and excessive dust.
- Ensure that airflow is unobstructed around the device and into the air intake vents.
- Make sure that the power and grounding cables are arranged so that they do not obstruct access to other device components.
- Periodically inspect the site to ensure that the grounding and power cables connected to the device are securely in place and that there is no moisture accumulating near the device.
- It is recommended to use a surge protector for the power connection.
- When the device is not in use, keep it powered off.
- Ensure the fans1, routing engine, and PICs are working properly. To display this status, use the command
show chassis environment
. The output is similar to the following:
user@host> show chassis environment
Class Item
Status Measurement
Temp Routing Engine OK 27 degrees C / 80 degrees F
Routing Engine CPU OK 27 degrees C / 80 degrees F
Routing Engine Absent
Routing Engine CPU Absent
Fans SRXSME Chassis Fan 0 OK Spinning at normal speed
SRXSME Chassis Fan 1 OK Spinning at normal speed
SRXSME Chassis Fan 2 OK Spinning at normal speed
SRXSME Chassis Fan 3 OK Spinning at normal speed
Power Power
Supply 0 Absent
Power Supply 1 OK
1NOTE: SRX100 and SRX110 models do not have fans or PIC slots.
High-End SRX Series
- Inspect the installation site for moisture, loose wires or cables, and excessive dust.
- Ensure that airflow is unobstructed around the device and into the air intake vents.
- Do not run the device for more than a few minutes without the air filter in place. Because the fans are very powerful, they could pull small bits of wire or other materials into the services gateway through the unfiltered air take and damage the internal components.
- Regularly inspect the air filter. A dirty air filter restricts airflow in the unit, impeding the ventilation of the chassis. It is recommended to replace the filter every six months by discarding. Do not attempt to clean or reuse them.
- When device is not in use, keep it powered off.
- Ensure the fans, routing engine and FPCs are working properly. To display this status, use the
show chassis environment
command. The output is similar to the following:
user@host> show chassis environment
Class Item
Status Measurement
Temp PEM 0 OK 30 degrees C / 86 degrees F
PEM 1 OK 30 degrees C / 86 degrees F
PEM 2 OK 35 degrees C / 95 degrees F
PEM 3 OK 35 degrees C / 95 degrees F
Routing Engine 0 OK 29 degrees C / 84 degrees F
Routing Engine 1 Absent
CB 0 Intake OK 27 degrees C / 80 degrees F
CB 0 Exhaust A OK 26 degrees C / 78 degrees F
FPC 0 Intake OK 26 degrees C / 78 degrees F
FPC 0 Exhaust A OK 41 degrees C / 105 degrees F
FPC 2 Intake OK 27 degrees C / 80 degrees F
FPC 2 Exhaust A OK 38 degrees C / 100 degrees F
Fans Front Fan OK Spinning at normal speed
Middle Fan OK Spinning at normal speed
Rear Fan OK Spinning at normal speed
- Check the status of the power supplies, ensure that the online status is OK. The output is similar to the following:
user@host> show chassis environment
pem
PEM 0 status:
State Online
Temperature OK 34 degrees C / 93 degrees F
AC Input OK 118 Volts
DC Output Voltage(V) Current(A) Power(W) Load(%)
12 11 132 11
PEM 1 status:
State Online
Temperature OK 29 degrees C / 84 degrees F
AC Input OK 119 Volts
DC Output Voltage(V) Current(A) Power(W) Load(%)
12 10 120 10
Other Recommendations
- Check the health of the storage media and ensure there are no bad sectors.
- Ensure dual-root partitions are up to date to avoid mismatched versions in the event the primary root partition becomes corrupted.
