[WLA/WLC] How to boot an AP using VLAN tag on the WLC controller

Summary:

This article explains how to boot an AP using VLAN tag on the WLC controller.

Solution:
  1. In static AP boot process, there is an option to specify the 802.1Q vlan tag to be applied to Ethernet frames sent from the distributed WLA.

  2. When static IP information is configured for the distributed WLA, the WLA uses the boot procedure as follows instead of the default boot procedure:

    a. The WLA ia configured to use the following information:

    Static IP address: 10.9.221.234; net mask: 255.255.255.0; default route: 10.9.221.221  
    Boot WLC: WLC2 (dns name); DNS IP: 10.9.221.1

    b.  After the WLA is configured with the above information, the next time the WLA boots, the following takes place:

    • The WLA sends an ARP request for the IP address to discover if the given IP address is available.
    • The DNS resolves the fully qualified domain name of the WLC, wlc2.
    • The WLA sends a find WLC message to the WLC.
    • The WLC responds to the find WLC message.
    • The WLC sends unicast message to the WLC and determines if the WLA should use a locally stored operational image or download it from the WLC.
    • Once the operational image is loaded, WLC sends configuration information to the WLA.
  3. To specify 802.1Q vlan tagging information for the WLA, use the following command:

    • Set ap apnum boot-configuration vlan vlan-tag tag-value mode { enable | disable}​
  4. When this command is configured, all Ethernet frames transmitted from the distributed WLA are formatted with an 802.1Q tag with a specified vlan number. Untagged frames sent to the distributed WLA are ignored.

  5. The following is sample output of the WLA when the it boots with vlan tag in the controller.

    ​Before the AP boots, the AP status output in the controller is as follows:

    After the distributed AP boots with static configuration given in step 2, using the vlan tag information mentioned in the following command, the AP status output in the controller as follows:
                 
    ​WLC# Set ap 1 boot-configuration ip 10.9.221.234 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 10.9.221.221 vlan vlan-tag 200 mode enable   

    WLC# show AP Status
