Converting default VC Ports to Uplink Ports on EX4300

Article ID: KB32431 KB Last Updated: 09 Jan 2018Version: 1.0
Summary:

There are 4 interfaces configured as VCP by default on Juniper EX4300 devices. These interfaces cannot be used by default as uplink interfaces, unless they are removed as VC Ports and configured as [et] interface. If you are not using these interfaces, it is possible to convert them into standard ports to work as up-link [et] interfaces.

Solution:

Please follow the next steps in order to configure the default VC Ports as regular Uplink ports:

  1. Identify the VC Ports that are not being used as VCP.

    show virtual-chassis vc-port
    fpc3:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interface Type Trunk Status Speed Neighbor
    or ID (mbps) ID Interface
    PIC / Port
    1/2 Configured -1 Up 40000 3 vcp-255/1/1
    1/3 Configured -1 Up 40000 1 vcp-255/1/2
    1/1 Configured Absent
    1/0 Configured Absent

  2. Delete the VC Ports that are not being used.

    request virtual-chassis vc-port delete fpc-slot 3 pic-slot 1 port 1
    fpc3:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interface Type Trunk Status Speed Neighbor
    or ID (mbps) ID Interface
    PIC / Port
    1/2 Configured -1 Up 40000 3 vcp-255/1/1
    1/3 Configured -1 Up 40000 1 vcp-255/1/2
    1/0 Configured Absent

After deleting the desired port, you will no longer see it when running the command ‚Äč'show virtual-chassis vc-port'.

  3. Once the VC Port has been deleted, you can configure it as an [et] interface (40 gig) using the following command:

    set interfaces et-3/1/1 unit 0

Then you will be able to see the physical interface and protocol up if you have a QSFP+ installed to it, and a cable connected.
show interfaces terse | match et

    et-3/1/1 up up inet

Note: Remember these ports cannot be used for channelizing on EX4300 devices.
