[EX] EX2200 and EX2200-C switches might become unresponsive after upgrade to Junos OS 15.1

Article ID: KB32672 KB Last Updated: 26 Jun 2018Version: 1.0

With newer releases of Junos OS, such as Junos OS 15.1, the overall memory footprint has increased. Due to this, the EX2200 and EX2200-C switches might become unresponsive after an upgrade to this version. This article explains why this happens and what the solution is.

When the EX2200 and EX2200-C switches are upgraded to Junos OS 15.1 and later releases, the device might become unresponsive or will hang, and the upgrade will go through only after a reboot.

The EX2200 and EX2200-C switches have a total memory of 512 MB, whereas the overall memory footprint has increased in Junos OS release 15.1 and later. There has been an increase in image size and also in system memory usage that the EX2200 platform cannot support while extracting and installing the image, particularly when a signed image is used.

There are two ways in which this issue can be resolved:

  1. By using an unsigned image (recommended)
  2. By using a signed image after verifying it

Using an unsigned image

To use unsigned images:

Using a signed and verified image

To use a signed image, perform the following steps and verify the package manually. In the following example, the EX2200 switch is used.

  1. Extract the image as follows:

    root@sea2-c1-b2-t0-r4-u1:RE:0% tar xzf jinstall-ex-2200-15.1R6-S5-domestic-signed.tgz
  2. Look for the certs.pem and jinstall-ex-2200-15.1R6-S5-domestic.tgz.sig files in the output.

    root@sea2-c1-b2-t0-r4-u1:RE:0% ls -lrt

  3. Verify the image.

root@sea2-c1-b2-t0-r4-u1:RE:0% /sbin/verify-sig -b -c certs.pem jinstall-ex-2200-15.1R6-S5-domestic.tgz.sig
Verified jinstall-ex-2200-15.1R6-S5-domestic.tgz signed by PackageProductionRSA_2018 method RSA2048+SHA1

The image is now verified and the device can be upgraded with the manually verified image by using the following:

After the image is verified, it can be installed by using the procedure described in Installing Software on an EX Series Switch with a Single Routing Engine (CLI Procedure).
