What happens when I turn off a ALG (Application Layer Gateway)

  [KB3280] Show Article Properties

Summary:
What happens when I turn off a ALG (Application Layer Gateway)

Symptoms:
ScreenOS 5.2.0
Solution:

ALG''s are good things.  What they do is look deeper into the packet and perform added functionality for expected behaviors.

There will be times when the expected behavior of protocols will not be what is expected by the NetScreen device.  In which case you may not get the same behavior when an ALG is disabled like changing a NAT header or opening a known return path. It is best to have the ALG enabled for the added functionality and only disable them when necessary
