Article ID: KB33160 KB Last Updated: 10 Feb 2019Version: 1.0
Summary:

This article explains why the "kern.warning kernel:perf samples too long" syslog message is logged, and indicates whether any action is required after the message is seen.

Symptoms:

The following warning messages are seen:

Jul 31 16:09:18 re0 : %PFE-4: fpc2 kern.warning kernel:perf samples too long (2511 > 2500), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50000
Jul 31 16:15:51 re0 : %PFE-4: fpc3 kern.warning kernel:perf samples too long (2502 > 2500), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50000

Cause:

These messages are related to the performance monitor tool in the Linux kernel of the Flexible PIC Concentrator (FPC).The perf tool runs in the background, and takes samples of CPU usage. If the sampling is too slow, the system decides to lower the sampling rate in order to avoid high CPU usage. This is when the above warning message is logged.

Solution:

These logs are for information only and can be ignored. If required, they can be suppressed from the syslog file.
