Article ID: KB33210 KB Last Updated: 23 Nov 2018Version: 1.0
Summary:

This article explains why the built-in 10-Gigabit ports and the SFP+s that are plugged into these ports on the MX104 Series routers may not be displayed in the show chassis hardware command output, and why the ports may not be functioning properly.

After explaining the cause, the article also gives the solution to rectify this issue.

Symptoms:
  • The 10-Gigabit ports on FPC2 of an MX104 router are not displayed in the show chassis hardware command.

  • The configurations on the ports are not taking effect.

  • Neighbors configured on the FPC2 10-Gigabit ports are not coming up.

Cause:

The built-in 10-Gigabit Ethernet Modular Interface Card (MIC) is fixed on an MX104 router. The MIC, labeled XE, is located on the front panel. And unless a license is installed, the ports and the SFP+s that are plugged into these ports will not show up in the show chassis hardware output and the ports will not function properly.

To check whether the license keys are present in the box:

user@device-re1> show system license

License usage:
                                 Licenses Licenses Licenses Expiry
  Feature name used installed needed
  scale-subscriber 0 10 0 permanent
  scale-l2tp 0 1000 0 permanent
  scale-mobile-ip 0 1000 0 permanent

Licenses installed: none
user@device-re1> show system license keys >>> No license keys installed
user@device-re1>

Solution:
  1. Install the license keys as follows:

user@device-re1> request system license add terminal

[Type ^D at a new line to end input,
enter blank line between each license key]
JUNOS_TEST_LIC_FEAT xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx
JUNOS_TEST_LIC_FEAT: successfully added
add license complete (no errors)
user@device-re1>

OR

[edit]
user@device# set system license keys key "JUNOS_TEST_LIC_FEAT xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx"

To add, delete, and view licenses, refer to the following:

  1. Verify that the license key is installed properly:

user@device-re1> show system license keys

JUNOS_TEST_LIC_FEAT xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx
xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx
                     xxxxxx xxxxxx x

user@device-re1> show system license
