Change in implementation of BMP protocol in Junos OS release 19.1 and 18.2X75-D30

Article ID: KB34082 KB Last Updated: 10 May 2019Version: 1.0
Summary:
Support for export of BGP AdjOutRIBs (pre & post policy) through BMP  (BGP Monitoring Protocol) based on https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-grow-bmp-adj-rib-out-03 was added in Junos OS release 18.2X75-D30 and 19.1.
Symptoms:
After an upgrade to Junos OS 18.2X75-D30 or newer, the BMP session may not be able to establish between the Junos device and the BMP collector. (Although, if the BMP collector is a Junos device, then the session can be established.)

The BMP collector side may throw the following error messages:
**stats msg: unknown stat len 11 found on stat type counter 11
**stats msg: only found 11 counters out of 13 claimed

Can this new functionality be disabled if the BMP collector is not a Junos device and doesn't support the IETF draft?
Cause:
Support for export of BGP AdjOutRIBs (pre & post policy) through BMP protocol based on the IETF draft was added in Junos OS releases 18.2X75-D30 and 19.1. The new feature added the following 4 different kinds of statistics into the BMP type 1 message:

Stat Type = 14: (64-bit Gauge) Number of routes in Adj-RIBs-Out Pre-Policy.
Stat Type = 15: (64-bit Gauge) Number of routes in Adj-RIBs-Out Post-Policy.
Stat Type = 16: Number of routes in per-AFI/SAFI Adj-RIB-Out Pre-Policy.
Stat Type = 17: Number of routes in per-AFI/SAFI Adj-RIB-Out Post-Policy.

If the BMP collector doesn't support this IETF draft, it may disconnect BMP session and throw error messages.
Solution:
In the current software version, there is no way to disable the new feature only.  However, as a workaround, it's possible to disable BMP type 1 message.

The following commands can be used to disable BMP type 1 message (this configuration change is not service impacting, and no more BMP type 1 messages will be sent to the BMP collector):

set routing-options bmp statistics-timeout 0
