Summary:

This article describes how to resolve a commit error received while 'COMMIT' performed during recovering root password on Juniper devices running Junos OS with Upgraded FreeBSD​.

Symptoms:

The following error occurred while performing root password recovery on Juniper devices running Junos OS with upgraded FreeBSD using the process documented in Recovering the Root Password of the User Access and Authentication Feature Guide.

root# commit
error: Failed to open /var/run/db/daemon_notification_map.data
error: commit failed: daemon file propagation failed
Solution:

If this happens, follow these steps:

  1. Exit out of configuration mode with uncommitted changes:

    {linecard:0}[edit]
    root# exit
    
    The configuration has been changed but not committed
    Exit with uncommitted changes? [yes,no] (yes) yes
     
    Exiting configuration mode
  2. Exit from CLI mode:

    {linecard:0}
    root> exit
     
    NOTE: Type 'exit' to restart the system.
  3. Perform commit:

    # mgd -I
    [1] 4072
    mgd: commit complete
  4. Set root password and commit:

    # cli
    
    {linecard:0}
    root> edit
    Entering configuration mode
     
    {linecard:0}[edit]
    root# set system root-authentication plain-text-password
    
    New password:
    Retype new password:
     
    {linecard:0}[edit]
    root# commit
    commit complete
    
  5. Exit out of configuration mode and reboot:

    {linecard:0}[edit]
    root# exit
    Exiting configuration mode
     
    {linecard:0}
    root> exit
     
    # reboot
