[BTI] Ethernet circuit is missing from PSM

Summary:

The proNX Service Manager (proNX SM) provides proactive, service-centric management of network resources using tools closely aligned with service providers’ own business processes. It is designed to simplify network operations from visualization and activation of services to troubleshooting and supporting end customers.

After activating an ethernet service (aka eservice) via the PSM Client application, the eservice can be searched and located by eservice name, and displayed to view the current status.  However, sometimes a customer may notice that the eservice is missing from PSM, while the the eservice still exists in the live network and is known to be up and passing traffic.

Cause:

Each eservice has a unique S-VLAN ID in each domain and the eservice name is associated with this S-VLAN ID.  However, if more than one eservice is using the same S-VLAN in the domain, this will cause the PSM server to display only the VLAN ID instead of the eservice name.  This can only occur if the S-VLAN were incorrectly added to a device manually using CLI commands.  PSM will never use the same S-VLAN twice.

Solution:

Locate the device which is incorrectly using S-VLAN, and delete the S-VLAN configuration directly using CLI commands, via a SSH or Telnet session.     

In the following example, an ethernet service called 8003305034 with S-VLAN 141 is missing from PSM, while the eservice is known to be up and working normally in the network.

Searching for S-VLAN 141 via the PSM Client, it is found there is another node element, named GGS125, also configured to use SVLAN 141, but not part of the eservice 8003305034. 

To remove the unwanted S-VLAN config, login to the node GGS125 via Telnet or SSH, and delete it using CLI commands.

In this example, we see that there is no eservice 8003305034 configured on this node. However, S-VLAN 141 is configured and bound to the NNI LAG interface.  No UNI interface is associated with this S-VLAN, therefore no customer traffic is using this S-VLAN for eservices at this node.

Remove S-VLAN 141 from the nni lag interface on node SSG125.

After deleting S-VLAN from the BTI 810 node, then reysnch the network via the PSM client. The eservice 8003305034 can now be normally displayed.

In the above example, a BTI PVX and a BTI SA810 are the eservice end points.  In a pure PVX network, a similar issue will occur if two different eservices are confgured with the same S-VLAN.   Normally this will not happen if PSM is used to activate the eservice.   If the same S-VLAN is entered when creating another eservice in the same domain, PSM will reject the operation, as the SVLAN ID has already been used.

This problem will usually only occure if eservices are configured via CLI, and the same S-VLAN is used twice.  In this case, PSM cannot detect the error, causing the eservice to be missing form PSM.

The troubleshooting steps are the same for any BTI switch product:

  1. Search the VLAN ID from PSM and locate all the Nodes which are configured with this SVLAN ID.
  2. Login via SSH or Telnet to the node where the S-VLAN is unwanted, and delete the S-VLAN configuration.   
  3. Re-Synch the network via the PSM Client. 

The eservices will then be displayed normally.
