[MX] 'Device: /dev/ada1, failed to read SMART Attribute Data' is reported for HAGIWARA CF card

Summary:

This article discusses a scenario where failure messages for the HAGIWARA CF card are continuously logged. These error messages have no impact on service and can be safely ignored. They can also be suppressed if you do not want them to continue getting logged.

Symptoms:

After upgrading to JUNOS 15.1 and later releases, REs (Routing Engines) with HAGIWARA CF card installed are seen with the following failure messages (every 30 minutes):

user@router> show log messages| match ada1
smartd[4357]: Device: /dev/ada1, failed to read SMART Attribute Data
smartd[4357]: Device: /dev/ada1, failed to read SMART Attribute Data
smartd[4357]: Device: /dev/ada1, failed to read SMART Attribute Data
<...>

Log message related with Smartd daemon reading the SSD attributes with HAGIWARA SYS-COM MFD10 Compact Flash.

Cause:

These messages are seen when the following conditions are met:

  • JUNOS 15.1 and higher
  • Presence of HAGIWARA SYS-COM MFD10 Compact Flash
     
Solution:

These error messages do not impact service and can be safely ignored.

To suppress repeating non-impacting messages, refer to KB9382 - How to prevent certain syslog messages from being written to the log file
