[BTI] Historical alarm log has missing alarms in BTI7000 series

Article ID: KB34935 KB Last Updated: 13 Sep 2019Version: 1.0
Summary:

Analyzing current and historical alarms and events is important to understand node behavior and network health. Sometimes, users may notice that the historical alarms are absent in the Historical Alarm Log records of a node.

This article explains how to troubleshoot missing alarms from the Historical Alarm Logs of the BTI7000 Series devices.

Symptoms:

Historical alarms in these devices are expected to be logged to the Historical Alarm Log. However, it may be seen that there are no records when a request for alarm logs is initiated from proNX900 Node Manager or via a TL1 session.

Example of an alarm log request showing no alarm data:

Similarly, no information is returned via the TL1 session window when retrieving the Alarm Log.

BTI7000> rtrv-log::alm;

   BTI7000 19-08-20 05:19:50
M  100 COMPLD
;
BTI7000>

Cause:

The above problem occurs because the option of logging alarm messages to Historical Alarm Log is turned OFF.

The current settings of logging messages can be checked from a TL1 session on a BTI7000 series node.

BTI7000> rtrv-attr-log;

   BTI7000 19-08-20 04:58:49
M  100 COMPLD
   "ALM, OFF, 5000"
   "CMD, ON, 5000"
   "EVT, ON, 5000"
   "DBCHG, ON, 5000"
;
BTI7000>

The example above shows that the logging of alarms is turned off.

Solution:

Log in to proNX900 Node Manager and enable alarm logs logging by navigating to proNX900 Main View > menu item View > Logs > Alarm Logs > Enable.

The alternative solution is to log in to a TL1 session and issue the Start Logging Alarm command as shown below:

BTI7000> sta-log:::100::alm;

Remember to check that the logging option is turned on after executing the above command.

BTI7000> rtrv-attr-log;

   BTI7000 19-08-20 05:01:30
M  100 COMPLD
   "ALM, ON, 5000"
   "CMD, ON, 5000"
   "EVT, ON, 5000"
   "DBCHG, ON, 5000"
;
BTI7000>

Note: Only a new alarm will be recorded in the Alarm Log after enabling or turning on the logging of alarms.
