[MX] Install/uninstall the JSU (Junos Selective Update) package

Article ID: KB35396 KB Last Updated: 04 Jan 2020Version: 1.0

This article provides the steps for installing/uninstalling the Junos Selective Update package.

When the JSU (jselective file) image is ready, use the following steps to install/uninstall the package.
Note: This example uses jselective-update-amd64-J2 with 17.1R2-S8.1 on a MX960.

Steps for upgrading the router to 17.1R2-S8.1 and loading JSU:

  1. Deactivate NSR/GRES on router. Assume RE0 is the master RE.

  2. On backup RE1 Load the 17.1R2-S8.1 and reboot backup RE1.

  3. Load JSU in backup RE1:

    request system software add /var/tmp/jselective-update-amd64-J2-x86-64-17.1R2-S8-J2.tgz

  4. RE-switch so RE1 will become master. Then verify the image on RE1:

The version is shown with the JUNOS and JSU version.

    labroot@rio-re1> show version
    Hostname: rio-re1
    Model: mx960
    Junos: 17.1R2-S8.1
    JUNOS Selective Update J2 [17.1R2-S8-J2]

On the supported FPC, check the microkernel version to see if the JSU is installed:

    RMPC8(rio-re1 vty)# sh ver
    Juniper Embedded Microkernel Version 17.1R2-S8-J2
Built by builder on 2019-12-20 19:03:03 UTC
Copyright (C) 1998-2019, Juniper Networks, Inc.
    All rights reserved.
  5. In new backup RE0, load 17.1R2-S8.1 and reboot RE0.

  6.  Load JSU on RE0.

  7. RE-switch again so RE0 becomes master again. Use the same command in step 4 to verify the system version and FPC microkernel version.

  8. Activate NSR/GRES back.

Steps for downgrading to 16.1 and delete JSU:

  1. Deactivate NSR/GRES. Assume RE0 is the master RE.
  2. On backup RE (RE1) uninstall JSU (using request system software delete jselective-update-amd64-J2)

labroot@rio-re1> request system software delete jse?
    Possible completions:
      <package-name> Name of package
      jselective-update-amd64-J2 JUNOS Selective Update J2 [17.1R2-S8-J2]
jservices-aacl JUNOS Services AACL Container package [20180712.080518_builder_junos_171_r2_s8]
jservices-alg JUNOS Services Application Level Gateways [20180712.080518_builder_junos_171_r2_s8]
  3. Downgrade to 16.1 and reboot backup RE1.

  4. RE-switch so RE1 will be the new master and verify the version on RE1 and on FPC to verify if JSU is removed using the same commands as when upgrading.

  5. Repeat steps 2-4 to downgrade on new backup RE0.

  6. Activate NSR/GRES back.
