[QFX/PTX] Major alarm 'Management Ethernet Links Down' is seen on device

Article ID: KB35856 KB Last Updated: 10 Jun 2020Version: 2.0

This article explains the meaning of the major alarm, "Management Ethernet Links Down" seen on a device, what actions to take, and how to clear it.

The following alarm is seen on the device:

root@device> show chassis alarms no-forwarding

1 alarm currently active
Alarm time               Class  Description
2020-05-22 08:09:33 UTC  Major  Management Ethernet Links Down

Management interfaces are the primary interfaces for accessing the device remotely. Typically, a management interface is not connected to the in-band network, but is connected instead to the device's internal network. Through a management interface you can access the device over the network using utilities such as ssh and telnet and configure the device from anywhere, regardless of its physical location. SNMP can use the management interface to gather statistics from the device.

Check if there is any cable/connection present on the Management Ethernet links.

Check the em0 and em1 to see if they have anything configured.

show interfaces terse |match em
em0 up down
em0.0 up down eth-switch
em1 up down

When checking the em0 and em1 interfaces, it is revealed that they have the configuration, but not is being connected so that's the reason for the alarm. The alarm above is triggered if the out-of-band management port on the QFX device is not connected.

The purpose of the alarm is well-intended. In case there is hardware damage on the link, then proceed to fix it.

Physical interface: em0, Enabled, Physical link is Down
Interface index: 8, SNMP ifIndex: 17, Generation: 6
Type: Ethernet, Link-level type: Ethernet, MTU: 1514, Clocking: Unspecified, Speed: Unspecified
Device flags : Present Running No-Carrier

If you do not use em0 and em1, then you can safely ignore the alarm or configure the knob below so you don't see the alarms raised:

Run the following command and monitor if the alarm get cleared:

#set chassis alarm management-ethernet link-down ignore

In case the device has em0 and em1 connections and the alarm is seen on the device, then contact your JTAC Representative for further investigation.
