[MX5] CLI command 'show interfaces terse' displays unsupported port status of xe-0/0/*

0

0

Article ID: KB35907 KB Last Updated: 16 Apr 2021Version: 2.0
Summary:

KB25588 - [MX] How does the port numbering work on an MX Series 5/10/40/80 device mentions that a particular MIC slot is activated depending on the MX license installed on the MX5/10/40/80 Series routers.

The MICs and ports activated by the license type are as follows:

  • MX5  - MIC 1/0 only
  • MX10 - MIC 1/0 and MIC 1/1
  • MX40 - MIC 1/0, MIC 1/1, and ports xe-0/0/0 and xe-0/0/1 of MIC 0/0
  • MX80 - MIC 1/0, MIC 1/1, and MIC 0/0 including ports xe-0/0/2 and xe-0/0/3

The point to note here is that MX5 does not support MIC 0/0 in a built-in FPC0 with 4 x 10GE XFP ports. However, users may see MIC 0/0 port status on an MX5 that was delivered to them as an RMA replacement part.

This article demonstrates such a scenario and clarifies that no action would be required and that the device can be used as expected.

Symptoms:

MX5-T (SN:XXXX) does not show interface status of xe-0/0/*, and all xe-0/0/* port LEDs are OFF. This is expected because MX5 does not support "xe-" interfaces in MIC 0/0.

User@MX5_XXXXX> show interfaces xe-0/0/* terse

MX5-T (SN:YYYYY) shows interface status of xe-0/0/*, and all xe-0/0/* port LEDs are ON in Red. This is unexpected due to the same reason mentioned above.

Cause:

These two MX5-Ts are behaving differently although they have the same HW/SW version, configuration, and licenses.

The following CLI commands show that both are MX5, but the difference is seen only in jnxLicenseMIB.
MX5-T (SN:YYYYYis showing some upgrade licenses via jnxLicenseMIB as shown below:

Solution:

After the grace period expires on MX5-T (SN:YYYYY), interfaces xe-0/0/* status is not seen, and jnxLicenseMIB does not show the obsolete upgrade licenses.
Users can wait until the grace period is expired and the inconsistency is resolved.  The output below shows after the grace period is over for MX5-T (SN:YYYYY).
