Summary:

The SPMB (Switch Processor Mezzanine Board) is a component on Junos series devices that controls, monitors, and programs the Switch Interface Boards (SIBs). The SPMB programs the ASICs on the Switching Fabric (SIBs). SPMB also reads the part number, serial number, revision number, and the temperature and voltage sensors for each SIB.

This article explains the meaning of 'spmb1 CMLC: Attempt 4047, proto(7) address 0x1000080' syslog messages mostly seen on MX, T, PTX, QFX series devices.

Cause:
  1. SPMB unable to connect to RE directly.
  2. SPMB existing as a logical entity on a device.
Solution:

The SPMB makes regular attempts to connect with the RE using chassisd. However, in cases where SPMB is a logical entity, it won't be possible.

SPMB is a switch processor mezzanine board. In some platforms such as T-series, the SPMB is hardware, which is part of the CB (Control Board). In other devices (Example MX1000X), the SPMB is not a physical entity anymore. Instead, it runs as a process on host Linux OS. Thus, SPMB will not be able to contact the RE (Routing Engine) directly. In other words, the chassis manager on SPMB will not be able to contact chassisd of the RE.

This does not indicate any hardware failure.

Verify if there are hardware issue indications in the outputs below:

>show chassis hardware
>show chassis alarm
>show chassis environment
