[Contrail] Indirect route statistics for Contrail cluster

Article ID: KB36065 KB Last Updated: 09 Jul 2020Version: 1.0
Summary:

For Contrail controller peers with gateway router with MP-BGP protocol, we oftentimes need to check both end; for the routes received from the peer, and routes advertised to the peer.

This article introduces how to check the route exchange information in a typical MP-BGP contrail setup.

Solution:

You can get the per-neighbor route statistics from the command line. For example, with Juniper MX router, the following command can be used:

    labroot@test> show bgp neighbor 172.18.101.101 | find bgp.l3vpn.0
    ...<snipped>...
        Table bgp.l3vpn.0 Bit: 20001
RIB State: BGP restart is complete
RIB State: VPN restart is complete
          Send state: in sync
          Active prefixes: 116
          Received prefixes: 116
          Accepted prefixes: 116
          Suppressed due to damping: 0
          Advertised prefixes: 34

Here we see that MX is peering with a Contrail controller, and counter of received and advertised routes.  In contrast, Contrail currently does not have a good way to verify it. From the GUI or introspect, we can dump any specific routing table, but there is no known statistics about "Received prefixes" and "Advertised prefixes".
