[PTX] Routing Engine image upgrade impact on IPLC card

Article ID: KB36073 KB Last Updated: 22 Aug 2020Version: 1.0

The Integrated Photonic Line Card (IPLC) is designed to be installed on a PTX3000 router chassis. Architecturally, this card can be plugged into either the FPC or the PIC slot. For control and management purposes, the card behaves similar to an FPC in the PTX3000 router. IPLC uses the same Processor Mezzanine Board (PMB) as the PTX Series router FPCs, although not as a daughter card. Due to mechanical and physical considerations, the PMB is designed onto the card directly. The card supports 100G wavelengths and contains 32 ports on the face plate. The IPLC uses an extension card to support an additional 32 ports.

During the upgrade of RE, when there is a reboot triggered after adding the new image for the change effect to take place, the IPLC card also restarts. This document explains the same behavior and provides caution to the user while performing upgrade activities.

In devices that run critical services on production network, it is recommended to have a hitless image upgrade on the PTX3000 devices. In a normal upgrade process, the RE upgrade also restarts the IPLC cards. This causes disruption in seamless wavelength pass-through.

In critical environments, there could be certain workarounds applied to prevent this from happening. Since this is highly dependent on user environment and on a need-to basis, it is always advised to perform such workarounds in consultation with a JTAC engineer. Please contact JTAC for assistance in such cases.
