High CPU usage for vSRX instances on vmware vShpere

Article ID: KB36174 KB Last Updated: 01 Sep 2020Version: 2.0

This article explains the high CPU usage observed for vSRX instances on vmware vSphere client.

High CPU usage for vSRX instances is seen on vsphere client under the performance tab (Monitoring > Performance) as shown below. The following graph shows a CPU usage of ~65% for a vSRX device which is completely idle.

vSRX virtual machines are deployed in poll model and it is expected to see high CPU usage on vSphere. This CPU usage is not related to the actual vSRX CPU usage. Login to vSRX and check the CPU usage using "show chassis routing-engine" and "show security monitoring" to get the actual CPU usage of vSRX.

As shown below, the vSRX CPU usage is ~5% and not 65% as reported on vSphere.
