[CSO] How are CPE devices monitored?

Article ID: KB36422 KB Last Updated: 03 May 2021Version: 3.0
Summary:

This article explains how the different types of customer premises equipment (CPE) are monitored.

Solution:

CPE devices are monitored by using device and cloud agents depending on the device type (see the table that follows).

  • In the case of a device agent, an agent runs in the device and periodically sends messages to the Contrail Service Orchestration (CSO) FMPM microservice. The device is declared down when N consecutive messages from the device are not received.

  • In the case of a cloud agent, the CSO cloud agent microservice remotely polls the device by using the SSH connection between the device and the CSO DCS microservice. The device is declared down if DCS reports an error or a timeout.

For dual CPE:

  • If one node goes down, then a host-down alarm is raised and a cluster-down alarm is also raised with “Major” severity.

  • If both nodes go down, then host-down alarms are raised for both the nodes and a cluster-down alarm is raised with “Critical” severity.

Device/CPE-Type Mode Frequency (seconds) N (num. of consecutive failures to declare host down) Cluster Alarm Raised
NFX-250 (Single) Device Agent 60 3 No
NFX-250 (Dual) Device Agent 60 3 Yes
NFX-150 (Single) Device Agent 60 3 No
SRX (Single) Cloud Agent 180 1 No
SRX (Dual) Cloud Agent 180 1 Yes

Note: One device is monitored by using only one of the agents, either device or cloud.
