[MX] MPC 5E card does not power up

Article ID: KB36604 KB Last Updated: 20 Mar 2021Version: 1.0
Summary:

This article explains some possible reasons behind MPC 5E card not powering up on Juniper MX platforms.

Solution:
  1. MPC 5E cards only support enhanced control boards (SCBE / SCBE2) on MX platforms. Verify the generation of control board installed on the chassis:

    show chassis hardware
  2. Once control board is verified, check if there are DPC modules installed, as MPC 5E would not work with DPC linecards (except Multi-service DPC). The above command can be used to check the existing linecard's families as well.

  3. Once linecard families are verified, check the network-services configured on the device:

show chassis network-services  << run this command on both the routing-engines
  4. Check the network-services from the RE shell from both of the routing-engines:

    start shell
    sysctl -a | egrep netsvc

On MX240, MX480, and MX960 routers, MPC5E powers on only if the network-services mode on the router is configured to either enhanced-ip or enhanced-ethernet. On MX2010 and MX2020 routers, only enhanced-ip is supported.

On checking from the shell, netsvc value of 2 indicates enhanced-ip as the network-services.
