Article ID: KB36760 KB Last Updated: 03 May 2021Version: 2.0
Summary:

This article explains the syslog message 'RPD_RT_HWM_NOTICE', which indicates a change in the number of routes in the table.

Symptoms:

The syslog message below is seen in the 'messages' file when the severity is set for 'info' and above:
(For more info on severity settings for syslog, refer )

<timestamp>   rpd[24849]: RPD_RT_HWM_NOTICE: New FIB highwatermark for routes: 945 [time]
<timestamp>   rpd[26693]: RPD_RT_HWM_NOTICE: New RIB highwatermark for unique destinations: 617 [time]

Note: [time] is the number of times the log messages were repeated. For example, if this value is 10, the log messages repeated 10 times.

Cause:

The syslog message, 'RPD_RT_HWM_NOTICE' was introduced as a feature in Junos 20.2R1 and higher where the current scale is verified against that in HWM (High Watermark) every 30s and is printed in the logs if there is a difference.

The default minimum interval at which the high-watermark values are logged is 30 seconds, and is configurable:

set routing-options highwatermark-log-interval <value>
Solution:

The logs with RPD_RT_HWM_NOTICE is a feature introduced which help in troubleshooting and understanding route scale. They are strictly informational and shows you the amount of routes.

This feature is added to keep track of the maximum number of routes in the Routing and Forwarding (RIB/FIB) tables and VRFs (MX Series and PTX Series). This log has nothing to do with an impeding limit we are reaching. Capturing this log does not impact production traffic.

If these logs are not desired, they can be suppressed.

Example:

user@lab-re0# show system syslog
file messages {
     any any;
     match "!(.RPD_RT_HWM_NOTICE.)"
}
Modification History:
2021-05-03: Added a note in the Symptoms section to clarify the meaning of [time].
