[EX/QFX] Device does not work with an online interface when Menara optic is used

When you have a 10G uplink from a Juniper device to another device (Juniper or third party), it is not uncommon to find that the Juniper device uplink is using a Menara 10G optic. However, when required, the Menara tuning cable (40006A-CBL) must be utilized to reconfigure the optic from OTN mode to PassThru mode and also change the Payload Type Identifier (Tx PTI) to 0x03 so that the optics work on Juniper devices.

This article explains how to use the tuning cable and reconfigure the optic parameters.


Note the following points:

  • The frequency of the optic is not changing and transport should be unaffected.

  • A tuning board is needed in this case because the 4200/4550 OS will not configure the Menara optic in the chassis.

  • Even though a tuning board is being used, the optic is only being reconfigured in this case and not re-tuned.

  • This process will have some service impact so it should be done only during a Maintenance Window with an approved SM and remote support.

  • The goal is to change the optic from OTN mode to PassThru Mode and also change the Payload Type Identifier (Tx PTI) to 0x03.



To achieve the requirement, you must have the correct Menara tuning cable kit (40006A-CBL), a laptop with the correct Menara software/setup (GUI version v1.17 or later), and access to the AGG location.

The following applications can be found by using the XFP Tuning cable (40006A-CBL). These require the use of Menara OTN XFPs.


Default Traffic Mode Setting

The OTN XFP supports traffic in either PassThru or OTN G.709 mode. The default “Traffic Mode” sub GUI allows users to program the traffic mode for the XFP module that will be used to bring the interface up.

Perform the following steps to set the default traffic mode:

  1. Click the Traffic Mode button on the Menara OTN XFP GUI.

  2. If an OTN XFP module exists already in the tuning cable, the GUI will start to analyze the XFP to determine the current traffic mode and whether the module is compatible for default traffic mode switching as shown below:

The “XFP Analyzer” checks the part number and the FW version to determine if the module supports default traffic mode switching or not. If it does not support traffic mode switching, then users will have to return the module back to Menara to set the new default traffic mode.

After “Analyze XFP” is completed, the GUI will display the current traffic mode in the “Current Traffic Mode” field.

Set the traffic mode to "Set to PassThru." This will program the XFP to the PassThru mode.

Note: The GUI will program, reset, and verify the new setting when it switches the traffic mode. It takes approximately 90 seconds for the whole process to complete.


  • The 4th character in the Part Number is changed to denote the new traffic mode.

  • The 2nd number in the Rev is also changed. It will be a "1" if it is in OTN mode and a "2" if it is in PassThru mode. This number is a "0" when it is shipped from manufacturing and will remain "0" until the mode has been switched at least once.


Set Payload Type Identifier

Payload Type Identifier is used to indicate the Payload Type code points that are defined in the G.709 standard. The purpose is to indicate the composition of the Optical Payload Unit (OPU) signal. Note that the payload type must be identical.

The PTI can be set to any user-defined value. The Set PTI GUI will also indicate the Current Tx PTI value in order to assist users in properly setting the Tx PTI value.

Select the “Set TX PTI” option from the “Menara OTN XFP GUI”.

The Current PTI information is shown in the “Current Payload Type Identifier (PTI) section. The Tx PTI indicates the current PTI value.

Set the new Tx PTI in the “New TX PTI” field by entering the desired value (03) if the current payload Tx PTI is not shown as 03 and clicking the “Set” button.

A success message will be displayed after completion. Note that "02" is shown in this screenshot. Your change should show as 03:
