The channelization of 40G into 4x10G in Junos OS Evolved

Summary:

This article explains how to enable 10G ports on PTX10008 chassis running Junos OS Evolved (20.4R2-EVO).

Symptoms:

I need to connect end host with the 10G link to PTX10008 chassis. The line card type is JNP10K-LC1201. The JNP10K-LC1201 supports the following transceiver types:

  • QSFP+ (40G)
  • QSFP28 (100G)
  • QSFP-DD (400G)

For the complete list of supported transceiver types, refer to Juniper's Hardware Compatibility Tool.

Solution:

The solution is to channelize 40-Gigabit Ethernet Port into four 10-Gigabit Ethernet channels using QSFP+ 40G breakout transceiver (QSFP+-4X10G-LR).

By default, all ports operate in 400-Gigabit Ethernet mode:

To configure et-1/0/30 port to operate as 10-Gigabit Ethernet channels:

user@router-re0# set interfaces et-1/0/30 speed 10g
user@router-re0# set interfaces et-1/0/30 number-of-sub-ports 4
user@router-re0# show | compare
[edit interfaces]
+   et-1/0/30 {
+       number-of-sub-ports 4;
+       speed 10g;
+   }
user@router-re0# commit

After committing the above config, et-1/0/30 port will be channelized to four 10G ports with names et-1/0/30:0 - et-1/0/30:3
 
user@router-re0# run show interfaces terse | match et-1/0/30

et-1/0/30:3             up    up

user@router-re0# run show interfaces et-1/0/30:0 | match speed

The needed config can be applied to the respective 10g port:

user@router-re0# commit

user@router-re0# run ping 192.168.2.2 count 3

Notes: 
  • The above shown configuration example is applicable for software releases from Junos OS Evolved 20.1R2 and later. 
  • For software releases from Junos OS Evolved 19.4R1-S1 up to Junos OS Evolved 20.1R2 the configuration is done under chassis hierarchy.
