[MX/PTX] Junos installation fails with error: "not enough space to unpack"

Article ID: KB37049 KB Last Updated: 10 Jun 2021Version: 1.0

Even with sufficient disk space on the router, Junos OS installation may fail with the "not enough space to unpack error." According to this article, this may be due to a corrupted Junos installation file. Ensuring that the MD5 checksum of the installation file is not corrupted by comparing with the original will resolve this error and complete the installation.

Even with sufficient disk space on the router, the installation can fail with the following error:

request system software add junos-install-mx-x86-64-20.4R2.7.tgz no-validate force no-copy
contents/jpfe-X960.tgz: gzip decompression failed
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors.
Error: not enough space to unpack /var/home/labroot/junos-install-mx-x86-64-20.4R2.7.tgz
ERROR: Either use 'force' or consider deleting snapshots using 'request system snapshot delete <snap>'

The issue can be due to a corrupted Junos OS installation file. Although the image is corrupted, it can still be extracted. However, during the unpacking (due to the corruption), the image is eating up all the storage space.

To resolve the error, check the MD5 checksum of the file and compare it with the MD5 checksum of the original installation file to ensure that there has been no corruption.

To know the steps to check the MD5 checksum, refer to KB17665 - [Junos] How to check MD5 checksum on a Junos installation package.

If you find any corruption in the MD5 checksum of the file, you would need to download the installation file again.
