Article ID: KB37100 KB Last Updated: 24 Jun 2021Version: 1.0
Summary:

With MX series routers used as a BNG (Broadband Network Gateway) and Address-Assignment Pools configured, there might be a intermediate minor alarm triggered and cleared right away while a valid license is installed.

This is found to be a cosmetic defect with the alarmd daemon and is reported by users running Junos version 15.1 and above.

Symptoms:
The following logs are seen repeatedly on random moments:
Jan 5 12:02:34.417 2021 router1 alarmd[24689]: Alarm set: License color=YELLOW, class=CHASSIS, reason=Radius/SRC Address Pool Assignment usage requires a license
Jan 5 12:02:34.417 2021 router1 craftd[14805]: Minor alarm set, Radius/SRC Address Pool Assignment usage requires a license
Jan 5 12:02:34.418 2021 router1 alarmd[24689]: Alarm cleared: License color=YELLOW, class=CHASSIS, reason=Radius/SRC Address Pool Assignment usage requires a license
Jan 5 12:02:34.432 2021 router1 craftd[14805]: Minor alarm cleared, Radius/SRC Address Pool Assignment usage requires a license

These logs occur while there is a valid license installed for this feature:

user@router1> show system license

License usage:
                                 Licenses Licenses Licenses Expiry
  Feature name used installed needed
  subscriber-accounting 1 1 0 permanent
  subscriber-authentication 0 1 0 permanent
  subscriber-address-assignment 1 1 0 permanent
  subscriber-vlan 0 1 0 permanent
  subscriber-ip 0 1 0 permanent
<...shortened output...>
Cause:

An issue in the alarmd daemon results in falsely triggering a minor alarm for a missing license. The error is cleared right after triggering it.

Solution:

The logs can be ignored, as the issue is cosmetic in nature and will not cause any impact to the system or subscribers.

The issue is addressed in the following Junos releases:

  • 17.4R3
  • 18.1R4
  • 18.3R3
  • 18.4R3
  • 19.1R2
  • 19.2R2
  • 19.3R1
