[PTX] Understanding the maximum file download speed to a device using non-management interfaces (network ports)

0

0

Article ID: KB37343 KB Last Updated: 21 Sep 2021Version: 1.0
Summary:

This article explains the maximum download speed for copying files to a PTX device when using non-management interfaces (network ports such as any ethernet except management port em0).

Symptoms:

Even if the actual interface speed is 100Gbps, you may only get 1.2Mb/s of download speed.

DUT download speed test:

root@PTX1000-re0:/var/home/labroot # scp root@172.253.74.99:/var/tmp/junos-install-mx-x86-64-18.4R3-S8.3.tgz /var/tmp
Password:
junos-install-mx-x86-64-18.4R3-S8.3.tgz                                             69% 1881MB   1.2MB/s   11:53
ETA^CKilled by signal 2.
root@PTX1000-re0:/var/home/labroot #

Cause:
The host bound traffic (traffic destined to an IP address of the PTX itself that is handled by the RE) is limited to 10Mbps on all PTX platforms.
Solution:

This behavior is expected for all PTX platforms as host-bound traffic (to RE) is shaped to 10Mbps.

As a workaround, in the production network, management port (em0) can be used to increase file download speed.
