[Junos] "error: configuration database modified" message seen while entering "configure exclusive" mode

Summary:

This article explains how to resolve the "error: configuration database modified" error that users may encounter when trying to enter the "configure exclusive" mode on devices that run Junos OS.

Symptoms:

While entering into exclusive configuration mode by using the "configure exclusive" command, the switch reports the "error: configuration database modified" error and does not allow any configuration.

Cause:

There are uncommitted changes that lead to this error but while checking for users with the show system users command, no other users are shown.

Solution:

To solve this issue, perform the following steps as the root user:

  1. Log in as the root user.  

root@jtac-qfx5100-48t-6q-r2284> start shell user root                                                                                                                                
  1. From the shell, issue the mgd clr-chg command.

root@jtac-qfx5100-48t-6q-r2284:RE:0% mgd clr-chg                                                                                                                   
root@jtac-qfx5100-48t-6q-r2284:RE:0%                                                                                                                                    
  1. Log in as the intended user and perform configuration by using "configure exclusive".

root@jtac-qfx5100-48t-6q-r2284> configure exclusive
