License failure after upgrading to 20.3R1 and later release on QFX5k with flex license

Article ID: KB37691 KB Last Updated: 30 Nov 2021Version: 1.0
Summary:

On QFX5k with flex license model, license failure is seen after upgrading to 20.3R1 and later releases.

Symptoms:

When QFX was upgraded to 20.3R1 and later releases and added the same license which was used on the prior version, the installation failed.

root@QFX5120> request system license add /tmp/license.txt
error: license key format not valid for this product
error: License validation failed. License addition failed due to invalid license
add license failed (1 errors)

root@QFX5120> show system license
License usage: none
Licenses installed: none
Cause:

In release 20.3R1, the license system changed to the Juniper Agile Licensing. Because of this, the license key format has been changed from prior versions. Since a new software version requires the new license key format, you'll see the error message on your QFX.

In addition, 20.3R1 and 20.4R1 are using a particular license key format. So when upgrading from 20.3R1 or 20.4R1, you will need the new license key.

Refer to the following TSB:
PTX10K and QFX5K running on 20.3R1 with flex license need to exchange a license key with new format when upgrading to 20.3R2 or later
Solution:

There are three types of license key formats:

  1. LKG old License: Junos versions prior to 20.3R1.
  2. Agile RMS License: 20.3R1 and 20.4R1
  3. LKG new License: 20.3R2, 20.4R2 and later.

A new license key format is needed when upgrading to a version across 20.3R1 and later releases.

Upgrading from LKG old license version to LKG new license version also requires exchanging license key format.

In case you need a different license key format, please contact Customer Care.
