H.323 Protocol for Voice-over-IP Overview

Note: This article applies to ScreenOS 4.0 and higher.

Warning: NetScreen only supports Point-to-Point, Direct, and Gatekeeper Direct modes of Voice-over-IP (VoIP)/H.323. NetScreen devices can only manage call registration with H.323. Gatekeeper Routed modes are not supported by NetScreen.

To allow secure VoIP communication between terminal hosts, NetScreen devices support the H.323 protocol. H.323 is an IP telephony protocol that also has optional extensions for video, raw data (file) transfer, and other applications. In such a telephony system, gatekeeper devices manage call registration, admission, and call status for VoIP calls. Gatekeepers can reside in the two different zones, or in the same zone. H.323 typically uses the TCP protocol with port 389 and 1503, and the H.323 protocol with port 1720.
