Upgrade via TFTP fails: Sys Warning: TFTP timeout max!
Symptoms:
Upgrade ScreenOS via Boot/Diag mode Cannot upgrade via tftp bootrom Console message: ### Sys Warning: tftp timeout max!
Solution:

Make sure the self IP address and the TFTP server IP address are on the same subnet.  If they are on different subnets, the UDP packets from the TFTP server will never reach the NetScreen, which accounts for the TFTP timeout message.

Here is the problem or goal:

  • Cannot upgrade via TFTP bootrom
  • Console message: ### Sys Warning: tftp timeout max!

Problem Environment:

  • Upgrade ScreenOS via Boot/Diag mode

Causes of this problem:

  • Switch running spanning tree is trying to negotiate duplex mode, and cannot due to NetScreen in boot/diag mode
