NetScreen-1000 Switch Board uses wrong MAC address

Article ID: KB5248 KB Last Updated: 07 Oct 2008Version: 2.0
Using original switch board on NetScreen-1000
Mac address get flipped
Packet drops due to mismatch in the MAC address going outbound
NetScreen ARP table shows one MAC address, but debug flow basic shows a different MAC address

The original switch board that came with the NetScreen-1000 has problems handling MAC addresses where the first bit is higher than 9.  This problem will occur on when communicating with any device with MAC address where the first bit starts with a or higher (in hex).

  1. If the other network device can change its MAC address, change it so its first bit is between 0-9.
  2. If the above workaround is not possible, upgrade to a Switch II board, which can handle the higher MAC address.
